Typical antennas in a mobile phone; material properties of plastics heavily influence antenna performance and design

Material selection is very important in optimizing the antenna performance of a wireless device. The number of antennas such as cellular, WLAN, Bluetooth, GPS & NFC is ever increasing in applications like the internet of things (IoT) sensors, smart home appliances, and meshed networks. Antenna performance is the key factor in reaching optimal performance such as range of operation for these devices and it is heavily dependent on the plastic materials surrounding it. Any lossy dielectric materials will reduce the antenna performance dramatically resulting in poor range for such devices. Hence the importance of selecting appropriate materials. Further, the environmental stability of their electrical properties needs to be accounted for during the selection process.

The dielectric properties such as relative permittivity and dielectric loss tangent values of the materials should be precisely known while designing antennas. Typically, antennas used in nowadays wireless device operates at very high frequencies ( from 13.5 MHz to tens of GHz). As dielectric properties (epsilon and tanδ) of materials are frequency-dependent, low frequency (~ 1MHz) material data will no longer be valid at GHz frequencies where the antenna is operating. Precise dielectric characterization of such materials into gigahertz frequencies is crucial in optimizing antenna dimensions through the state of the art 3D EM tools. It is well known that the simulation model is as accurate as its definition of its material parameters. Choosing correct materials with low dielectric losses will lead to better antenna performance and longer range for these devices. Antenna simulation entwined with precise material data will save you unnecessary multiple prototyping rounds and precious time.

At CoreIoT Technologies Ltd., we offer

  • Precise material dielectric characterization of plastics, ceramics, into gigahertz frequencies
  • Material consulting services.
  • Antenna design & consulting services for wireless devices. We ensure an optimal balance between size, performance, cost, and quality.

With deep-dive understanding in the field, we can help you to design your product in the first place when it comes to antenna design and right material selection. Further, measuring materials before and after environmental tests like temperature ranges -40 to +85 C will tell you about the water absorption of different materials. If such materials are used device manufacturing will result in antenna detuning over the device lifecycle.
